The Benefits of Citrus

Oranges, grapefruits, tangerines …. It's well-known: citrus fruits and their juices are excellent sources of vitamin C. But did you know that they're also rich in folic acid and phytonutrients? Or that citrus fruit is the subject of several scientific studies1 concerning heart disease, obesity and cancer?

We also need to know that a healthy diet containing foods high in potassium and low in sodium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure, a risk factor for stroke and heart disease. Orange juice is a good source of potassium and is low in sodium.

Vitamin C

The vitamin C contained in citrus fruit is recognized for its properties as an antioxidant – that is, its ability to minimize the physiological damage caused by free radicals. Unfortunately, our bodies can't store vitamin C; therefore, we need to consume it every day, such as by drinking orange juice.

Folic acid

Citrus fruit is also rich in folic acid (vitamin B9). This nutrient is recognized to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, and is recommended for pregnant women or for those planning to become pregnant.

Phytonutrients

Lastly, citrus fruit contains several varieties of phytonutrients, such as flavonoids, monoterpenes, limonoids and carotenoids.

With its different brands, Lassonde offers you citrus juices and cocktails that let you enjoy numerous benefits while stimulating your taste buds. You simply have to choose the variety that pleases you!
